Looking for the Local and Got the Express

It seems the first question every young pitcher asks me is, “how to do I throw harder?”. It’s understandable because everything to do with pitching seems to be based on velocity. Scouts come equipped with the team issued radar guns, stadiums have displays in the outfield and TV stations have numbers that flash on the screen with every pitch. Radar gun readings can make or break a pitcher’s opportunity to play at the next level. With that said, the most important thing to know about “lighting up the gun” is throwing the right pitch. Basically, the one that will give you the best reading.

In this case, that pitch is the Four Seam Fastball.

  • Grip the ball comfortably across the two seams that form the horseshoe
  • Your index and middle finger should be slightly spread
  • Rest the ball on your thumb
  • Leave a small gap between the ball and your palm
  • Be sure to hold the lightly for maximum wrist flexibility
  • Let’er Rip!
